Utility Facts
Electric System
The Town of Steilacoom purchases all its power needs as a “Full Requirements Preference Customer” under a ten-year contract (2001 - 2011) with Bonneville Power Administration. The Town’s electric system configuration consists of the following:
  • 150,000 feet (28.4 miles) of underground cables
  • 450 transformers
  • 513 streetlights
  • 2,700 secondary services (meter connections)
  • 197 underground vaults
  • 4 main primary feeder lines (Madrona, Cherrydale, Union Avenue and Lexington)
  • 7 sets of feeder switch gear (Sunnyside Beach, Lafayette & Union, Sequalish & Chambers, Hewitt & Madrona Point Lane, Union & Gove, Oxford & Roe, Main & Sequalish)
  • 4 feeder reclosures (substation)
  • 1.5 miles of overhead wires and transformers

Water Distribution System
The Town of Steilacoom no longer pumps its own water supply. The Town currently purchases water as a wholesale customer of Lakewood Water District. The Town maintains its primary well (Well #4) in a standby mode in case of emergency. The water distribution system consists of the following:

  • 1 supply well (1,500 gpm capacity) - maintained in standby status
  • 9 pressure pumps
  • 3 standpipes (storage tanks) - 3.00 million gallon capacity
    (2 - 500,000 gal. tanks at Roe Street booster station)
    (1 ea - 2 million gal. capacity, Lakewood Water District)
  • 32.2 miles of water mains
  • 1835 metered connections
  • 435 water main valves
  • 235 fire hydrants
  • 8 pressure reducing stations
  • 2 pressure relief stations
  • 1 pressure sustaining station

Storm Drain Collection System
The Town of Steilacoom maintains its own storm drain system consisting of open ditches, catch basins, underground piping, and outfalls. The Town’s storm drain system includes the following:

  • 16 miles of storm drain pipe
  • 3 miles of open ditches
  • 740 catch basins
  • 6 outfalls (drainage points to Puget Sound)
    1. 5th Street Waterway
    2. Chambers Street Waterway
    3. Cedar Street Waterway
    4. Chambers Bay Outfall
    5. 2nd and Champion Street Outfall
    6. Chapman Loop Outfall

The Town is currently in the process of updating our stormwater plan.  Copies of the existing plan may be obtained at the Public Works Office located at 1030 Roe Street.

Sanitary Sewer Collection System
Town of Steilacoom utility crews maintain the sanitary sewer collection system. The Town pumps all of its sewage for treatment to the Pierce County Plant located at Chambers Creek. The Town’s sanitary sewer system consists of the following:

  • 27.5 miles of sewer mains
  • 3,059 service connections
  • 629 manholes
  • 7 lift stations (sewage pump stations)
  • 1 primary pump station with an 18-inch force main

Streets Department
The Town of Steilacoom maintains its own system of streets and roadways within the town limits. The Town’s streets inventory is as follows:

  • 31 miles of roadway 
  • 22 miles are asphalt concrete pavement (ACP) 
  • 8 miles of bituminous surface treatment (BST) 
  • 1 mile of gravel (unimproved) 
  • 1,000+ traffic control devices (signs & poles)
